How to get the most money by scrapping your van in the UK?

The time has come. Your old van has died, and it's time to say goodbye. You've had some great times together, but everything comes to an end. And now that it's time to take it to the scrapyard, you may be wondering if you can make one last profit from your dear friend before the final farewell.

Well, the scrapyards usually pay a compensation for your old van, but there are ways to make more money. Here a few of them.

Check in different scrapyards

Not all scrapyards pay the same for your old van. That's why it's a good idea to contact several scrapyards before you hand in your old van, and see what they offer you. Some scrapyards for vans are specializedin certain makes or models, for example, if your vehicle belongs to one of these models, you will probably be able to get a higher profit. So don't just take the first offer.

If you don't have time to do the comparison yourself, there are numerous websites and apps specialized in this task. You just fill in the form with the details of the vehicle, and they give you back an estimated comparison of the prices that scrapyards can pay you for your old van.

Sell some parts yourself

Most scrapyards pay for the van based on its weight. But sometimes you might want to sell some parts of the van yourself, before taking it to the scrapyard. Some parts that you can sell on your own and make good money are the mirrors, the windshield, the seats, or the steering wheel. But before you decide to do this you should be aware of at least two important things.

- Some breaker yards do not accept partially dismantled vans, so check if the ones in your area will accept it in order to avoid problems.

- If you remove parts from the van, you will not be able to drive it, and you will have to notify the DVLA that your vehicle is off the road. In this case, the vehicle will be declared as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and you will not be able to drive it on public roads under any circumstances.

Check out the reviews of the different scrapyards

Before you decide to take your van to one scrapyard or another, check customer reviews. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to receive a quote by phone, email or via a price comparison app and when you arrive at the scrapyard, the offer drops. The scrapyard will allege defects in condition, or anything else. That's why it's a good idea to check reviews from previous customers to see if they have had similar experiences or if the process was smooth and easy. This doesn't guarantee that they won't actually lower the price due to the condition of the vehicle, or if there are any missing parts (you should advise the scrapyard of this if you phone or email them for a quote). But if people have had good previous experiences, the chances of problems will be less.
